Drug and Alcohol Awareness

Core Objective: Raising awareness of drug and alcohol and the effects of this on emotional well-being. Schools have a duty and requirement to promote the students’ well-being (Ofsted), and to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. As part of this, they have a responsibility to help young people manage risk, reducing the likelihood they may be harmed by the use of legal and illegal drugs. The DfE 2012 drugs advice for schools makes clear the responsibility for;

  1. Identifying students at risk of drug misuse,
  2. Ensuring support is available for;
  • those who require general information and education,
  • those who could benefit from targeted prevention,
  • those who require a more detailed assessment of their needs.

Alcohol and drug education is a statutory part of the science curriculum for schools in England, it is recognised this can be built on through the Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum. InspireIgnite support schools that have a duty to promote children and young people’s wellbeing, and are also required to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
